What is GWA?

The Math: How GWA and GPA Are Actually Calculated?
Both systems use the exact same weighted average formula they just plug in different numbers.

This is why you can never simply write your GWA in a GPA field even though both are weighted averages, the numbers mean completely different things on completely different scales.
A Critical Point: Not All Philippine Universities Use GWA

Two of the Philippines’ most prominent universities do not use the standard 5-point descending GWA scale:
De La Salle University (DLSU): Uses an Ascending 4.0 GPA Scale
DLSU grades on a 0.0 to 4.0 scale where 4.0 is the highest and 0.0 is failing the same orientation as the American GPA system. A DLSU student with a 3.5 is performing excellently. This is the opposite of what a 3.5 means on the standard Philippine 5-point scale, where it falls between Satisfactory and Passing.
If you are a DLSU graduate applying abroad, your transcript already uses an ascending scale this actually makes international conversion more straightforward for you than for students from UP or UST.
Ateneo de Manila University: Uses Letter Grades Converted to GPA
Ateneo uses letter grades (A, B+, B, C+, C, D, F) which are internally converted to a GPA-style numerical scale. An “A” at Ateneo is equivalent to 1.00 on the UP scale and approximately 4.00 on the US GPA scale.
University of the Philippines (UP): Standard 5-Point Descending Scale
UP uses the classic Philippine 5-point descending scale where 1.00 is highest. UP’s scale is the one most Filipino students are familiar with and the one this article primarily addresses.
Why This Matters for Your Application
If you attended DLSU or Ateneo and an international university asks for your GPA, your transcript is already in a format closer to what they expect. If you attended UP, UST, FEU, PUP, or most other Philippine universities using the 5-point scale, you need to explicitly convert and explain your grading system in your application.
How to Convert GWA to GPA (The Right Way)
There is no single universally official GWA-to-GPA conversion formula. Different universities, scholarship committees, and credential evaluation agencies apply their own methodology. Here is how each major pathway works:
Method 1: The Common Approximation Formula
The most widely used approximation in Philippine academic circles:

WES (World Education Services) is an internationally recognized credential evaluation agency used by universities in the United States and Canada. If you are applying to American or Canadian universities and need an official GPA evaluation of your Philippine transcript, WES will evaluate your transcript and convert your GWA to a North American GPA equivalent.
WES applies its own conversion methodology which accounts for your specific university’s grading system not just the 5.0 formula. For serious graduate school applications, a WES evaluation carries far more credibility than a self-calculated conversion.

Method 3: University-Specific Conversion
Many international universities publish their own conversion tables for Philippine transcripts. Before applying, check the university’s international admissions page or contact their admissions office directly. They will often tell you exactly what GWA score they consider equivalent to their GPA cutoff, or they may request a WES evaluation instead of your own conversion.
Real Situations Where This Difference Matters
Situation 1: Applying to a US Graduate School
Most US graduate programs ask for GPA on a 4.0 scale. The minimum for most programs is 3.0. A Filipino student with a GWA of 1.75 (excellent by Philippine standards) needs to show that this equals approximately 3.25 on the US scale not 1.75.
