Comparison between GWA and GPA

GWA vs GPA: What’s the Difference?

You worked hard for your grades. Your GWA looks excellent. Then a scholarship application, a graduate school form, or a job abroad asks for your GPA and suddenly you are not sure what to write.

Before anything else, calculate your GWA here so you have your exact number ready when you need to convert or report it.

This confusion trips up Filipino students every year. Some write their GWA directly into a GPA field. Others guess at a conversion and get it wrong. A few simple leave it blank.

This guide ends the confusion for good. You will learn exactly how GWA and GPA differ, why that difference matters more than most articles explain, and precisely when to use each one with real examples from Philippine universities.

The Single Most Important Thing to Understand First

Before definitions, formulas, or tables you need to know this one fact:

GWA and GPA run in opposite directions

In the Philippine GWA system:

  • 1.00 is the highest possible grade (Excellent)
  • 5.00 means Failed
  • A student with a GWA of 1.25 is performing at the top of their class

In the American GPA system:

  • 4.00 is the highest possible grade (A / Excellent)
  • 0.00 means Failed
  • A student with a GPA of 1.25 is nearly failing

This means a Filipino student who writes “1.25” in a GPA field on an American university application has accidentally told the admissions office they are a failing student when they are one of the best in their class.

This inverse relationship is the root of almost all real-world problem students face when dealing with international applications. Everything else in this article builds on this single fact.

What is GWA?

GWA (General Weighted Average) is the official academic performance metric used by Philippine colleges and universities. It is regulated by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and used across state colleges and universities (SUCs) and most private higher education institutions (HEIs) in the country.

The word “weighted” is the key. Your GWA does not treat all subjects equally. A 5-unit subject like Engineering Mathematics has five times more impact on your GWA than a 1-unit PE class. This makes GWA a more accurate picture of your actual academic workload and performance.

Where GWA is used?

  • Academic standing (regular, probationary, or dismissed status)
  • Latin honors eligibility: Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, Summa Cum Laude
  • Local scholarship applications: CHED Merit Scholarship, DOST-SEI Scholarship, Iskolar ng Bayan
  • Dean’s List recognition
  • Graduate school applications within the Philippines

GWA scale used by most Philippine universities (5-point scale)

GWA Description
1.00 Excellent
1.25 – 1.50 Very Good
1.75 – 2.00 Good
2.25 – 2.50 Satisfactory
2.75 – 3.00 Passing
5.00 Failed

What is GPA?

GPA (Grade Point Average) is the academic performance metric used in the United States, Canada, Australia, and many international universities. Unlike GWA, GPA uses an ascending scale where higher numbers always mean better performance.

The standard GPA scale assigns point values to letter grades:

Letter Grade GPA Points Percentage Equivalent
A / A+ 4.00 93–100%
A- 3.70 90–92%
B+ 3.30 87–89%
B 3.00 83–86%
B- 2.70 80–82%
C+ 2.30 77–79%
C 2.00 73–76%
D 1.00 60–69%
F 0.00 Below 60%

Like GWA, GPA is also a weighted average each grade is multiplied by the number of credit hours the course carries. The mathematical structure of the calculation is identical to GWA. The difference is entirely in the scale and direction.

Where GPA is used?

  • US, Canadian, and Australian university applications
  • International scholarship programs like Fulbright, Chevening, DAAD, ADB-JSP
  • Global employer applications that request an academic transcript
  • Graduate programs at internationally ranked universities

GWA vs GPA: Side-by-Side Comparison

The Math: How GWA and GPA Are Actually Calculated?

Both systems use the exact same weighted average formula they just plug in different numbers.

GWA Calculation (Philippine 5-point scale)

A student takes three subjects:

Subject Units Grade (PH Scale) Grade × Units
Calculus 5 1.75 8.75
English 3 1.50 4.5
History 3 2.00 6.00
Total 11 19.25

GWA = 19.25 ÷ 11 = 1.75

GPA Calculation (US 4.0 scale) Same Student, Same Performance

The same student’s grades translated to the US letter grade system:

Subject Credits Letter Grade GPA Points Points × Credits
Calculus 5 B+ 3.30 16.50
English 3 A- 3.70 11.10
History 3 B 3.00 9.00
Total 11 36.60

GPA = 36.60 ÷ 11 = 3.33

For a faster and more accurate result, use our GWA to GPA Converter instead of reading the table manually.

Same student. Same academic performance. GWA = 1.75. GPA = 3.33.

This is why you can never simply write your GWA in a GPA field even though both are weighted averages, the numbers mean completely different things on completely different scales.

A Critical Point: Not All Philippine Universities Use GWA

This is where it gets more complicated and where most comparison articles get lazy.

Two of the Philippines’ most prominent universities do not use the standard 5-point descending GWA scale:

De La Salle University (DLSU): Uses an Ascending 4.0 GPA Scale

DLSU grades on a 0.0 to 4.0 scale where 4.0 is the highest and 0.0 is failing the same orientation as the American GPA system. A DLSU student with a 3.5 is performing excellently. This is the opposite of what a 3.5 means on the standard Philippine 5-point scale, where it falls between Satisfactory and Passing.

If you are a DLSU graduate applying abroad, your transcript already uses an ascending scale this actually makes international conversion more straightforward for you than for students from UP or UST.

Ateneo de Manila University: Uses Letter Grades Converted to GPA

Ateneo uses letter grades (A, B+, B, C+, C, D, F) which are internally converted to a GPA-style numerical scale. An “A” at Ateneo is equivalent to 1.00 on the UP scale and approximately 4.00 on the US GPA scale.

University of the Philippines (UP): Standard 5-Point Descending Scale

UP uses the classic Philippine 5-point descending scale where 1.00 is highest. UP’s scale is the one most Filipino students are familiar with and the one this article primarily addresses.

Why This Matters for Your Application

If you attended DLSU or Ateneo and an international university asks for your GPA, your transcript is already in a format closer to what they expect. If you attended UP, UST, FEU, PUP, or most other Philippine universities using the 5-point scale, you need to explicitly convert and explain your grading system in your application.

How to Convert GWA to GPA (The Right Way)

There is no single universally official GWA-to-GPA conversion formula. Different universities, scholarship committees, and credential evaluation agencies apply their own methodology. Here is how each major pathway works:

Method 1: The Common Approximation Formula

The most widely used approximation in Philippine academic circles:

GPA = 5.00 − GWA

GWA (PH Scale) Approximate GPA (4.0 Scale)
1.00 4.00
1.25 3.75
1.50 3.50
1.75 3.25
2.00 3.00
2.25 2.75
2.50 2.50
2.75 2.25
3.00 2.00

Important: This formula is an approximation. It works reasonably well for mid-range GWA values but is not mathematically exact. Do not use this formula for official university applications without verifying with the target institution.

Method 2: World Education Services (WES) Evaluation

WES (World Education Services) is an internationally recognized credential evaluation agency used by universities in the United States and Canada. If you are applying to American or Canadian universities and need an official GPA evaluation of your Philippine transcript, WES will evaluate your transcript and convert your GWA to a North American GPA equivalent.

WES applies its own conversion methodology which accounts for your specific university’s grading system not just the 5.0 formula. For serious graduate school applications, a WES evaluation carries far more credibility than a self-calculated conversion.

Other recognized evaluation agencies include Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE) and Josef Silny & Associates.

Method 3: University-Specific Conversion

Many international universities publish their own conversion tables for Philippine transcripts. Before applying, check the university’s international admissions page or contact their admissions office directly. They will often tell you exactly what GWA score they consider equivalent to their GPA cutoff, or they may request a WES evaluation instead of your own conversion.

Real Situations Where This Difference Matters

Situation 1: Applying to a US Graduate School

Most US graduate programs ask for GPA on a 4.0 scale. The minimum for most programs is 3.0. A Filipino student with a GWA of 1.75 (excellent by Philippine standards) needs to show that this equals approximately 3.25 on the US scale not 1.75.

What to do: Submit your original Philippine transcript along with a WES or ECE credential evaluation. Many US universities specifically require a credential evaluation from a NACES-member agency. Do not convert manually and write the converted number without documentation.

Start by getting your exact GWA using our free GWA Calculator. Convert your GWA to GPA accurately using our GWA to GPA Converter then proceed with your WES or ECE credential evaluation.

Situation 2: Applying for an International Scholarship

Scholarships like Fulbright (USA), Chevening (UK), DAAD (Germany), ADB-Japan Scholarship Program, and MEXT (Japan) all request GPA. Most have a minimum GPA requirement of 3.0 or equivalent.

Use our GWA to GPA Converter to check if your GWA meets the minimum GPA equivalent required by your target scholarship.”

What to do: Contact the scholarship office and ask specifically how they evaluate Philippine GWA. Many scholarship programs are familiar with the Philippine system and accept GWA directly alongside a brief explanation of the grading scale.

Situation 3: A Job Application Abroad Asks for GPA

Some multinational companies particularly in finance, consulting, and technology ask for GPA on job application forms. For fresh graduates from Philippine universities, this causes the same confusion.

What to do: Most job application forms allow you to specify the scale. Write your GWA followed by the scale in brackets for example: 1.75 / 5.00 scale (Philippine GWA system, where 1.00 is highest). This is far clearer than converting to a number the recruiter cannot verify.

Which One Should You Focus On as a Filipino College Student?

Focus on GWA throughout your entire college career.

It determines your Latin honors, scholarship eligibility, academic standing, and local graduate school applications. It is what your Philippine registrar records and what local employers understand.

Track your GWA every semester with our GWA Calculator, it takes less than a minute and keeps you on top of your academic standing year-round.”

Learn how to convert and explain GPA only when you need it

Specifically, when applying to international universities, global scholarships, or foreign employers. At that point, invest in a proper WES evaluation rather than relying on an approximation formula.

Think of it this way: GWA is your academic identity in the Philippines. GPA is how you translate that identity when speaking to the world outside.
